Douglas Jensen obituary (2021) – Lincoln, NE


LINCOLN – Douglas D. Jensen, 88, of Lincoln, passed away on Tuesday, December 7, 2021.
He was born July 31, 1933 to Anders and Lucille in Boelus, and lived all his life in Boelus, Snyder, Madison and Norfolk, before moving to Lincoln to be closer to his family.
Doug was the epitome of a Renaissance man. He earned a master’s degree from the University of Nebraska and, throughout his diverse career, served as a second lieutenant in the United States Army, a high school teacher and administrator, a small business owner, and an elected official.
He constantly strove to innovate, from developing liberal arts programs like melodramas and foreign language lessons for small town high school students in the 1950s, to establishing the Centura School. in the 1960s long before consolidation of education became the norm, to add a flower shop on Main Street. to promote a local greenhouse business in the 1970s, or build a vibrant network of rural schools in northeastern Nebraska in the 1980s and 1990s.
But at the end of his well-lived life, Doug’s family was what made him most proud.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Heimann Jensen; her children, Julie (Mark) Hauxwell, Todd (Amy Fowler) and Troy (Wendi Chiarbos); seven grandchildren, Mark, Chloe, Emily, Trevor, Eric, Ryan and Peter; six great-grandchildren, Logan, Cooper, Harlan, Declan, Isaac and Henry; one brother, Russ; and Mike Foreman.
He was predeceased by his brother Ken.
Join Doug’s family for a relaxed celebration of life at 6 pm Sunday at Butherus-Maser & Love Funeral Home, 4040 A St., in Lincoln; 11:00 am Monday funeral mass at North American Martyrs Catholic Church, 1101 Isaac Drive, Lincoln; and a brief funeral service at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, December 14, at Soulville cemetery near Boelus.
