Mineral explorer Metal Hawk has begun a 3,000m RC drilling campaign targeting nickel sulphide targets at the company’s Berehaven nickel-gold project near Kalgoorlie, Washington. The program is designed to test several areas of nickel sulphide potential within the project area, including four new electromagnetic conductors within 5 km of Commodore’s notable nickel discovery last year.
Drilling to date has focused on exploration along a westerly ultramafic trend on the project’s Commodore prospect, where significant nickel sulphide mineralization has been identified to the north and south on the Torana prospects. and Commodore South.
As the RC program continues to further probe the westerly trend, a multi-hole volley will be fired at four electromagnetic conductor targets approximately 3 km to 5 km east of Commodore.
Because the weathering east of Commodore is shallower, the electromagnetic targets were successfully detected by a ground-based moving loop electromagnetic survey earlier in the year.
The new electromagnetic targets are along strike of the Blair North and Euston nickel prospects just outside of the Metal Hawk northern fenceline.
Previous drilling at Blair North encountered 2m at 3.94% nickel from 161m downhole and a single hole at Euston returned 4m at 1.78% nickel from 140m, of which 2m at 2.44% nickel from 140m.
The holes were designed to intersect a conductive target area between 150m and 220m.
Follow-up downhole electromagnetic surveys are planned after drilling to detect any conductive responses related to nearby accumulations of nickel massive sulphide mineralization.
We are continuing systematic rigorous exploration at Berehaven with this next phase of RC drilling. Since the discovery of high-grade nickel at Commodore late last year, our regional work on this project has generated several other attractive nickel and gold discovery opportunities.
In addition to further RC drilling at Torana, the company is planning a diamond drill campaign to test a powerful downhole electromagnetic conductor on the prospect.
The off-hole conductive target lies approximately 200m downslope of recent drilling which encountered a 10m zone of disseminated mineralization containing 0.55% nickel from 130m into a 30m wider zone at 0, 37% nickel from 125m.
Torana is 1.5 km north of Commodore, where Metal Hawk discovered high-grade nickel sulphide in September last year. Initial assays from one of the discovery holes revealed a 1m interval grading 5.89% nickel from 144m down.
Prior to the discovery, the company consolidated over 90 square kilometers of unexplored land at Berehaven, north of the Blair nickel sulphide deposit which produced approximately 1.26 million tonnes at 2.62% nickel for nearly 33 000 tons of metal contained between 1989 and the closure of the mine in 2008.
To cap off the Metal Hawk program, further drilling will be done on the Commodore South prospect where recent drilling has intersected 2m at 0.54% nickel from 171m in a wider ultramafic package of 13m at 0 .24% nickel from 167 m.
