New vice president of business affairs named at Austin College – Herald Democrat

Austin College President Steven P. O’Day announces the selection of Pernell Jones as Vice President of Business Affairs.

Jones arrived at Austin College last month with the benefit of a long history in higher education. Most recently, he served as vice president of finance and operations at Eastern University, an ecumenical Christian university in St. Davids, Pennsylvania, which has 4,500 undergraduate and graduate students. He had been at Eastern University since 2011.

“Pernell’s successful experiences at institutions across the United States show his abilities to adapt and collaborate with others,” O’Day said. “His 30-year career assures me that he has the knowledge and expertise to handle Austin College’s financial decisions.” Jones will also have input into other areas of Austin College decision-making as a member of the university’s leadership team.

His years at Eastern University also included CFO and executive leadership roles for accounting and finance, conferences and special events, facilities, human resources, student accounts, and technology services. He served as Deputy Treasurer of the Board of Directors and Executive Liaison for the Audit Committee, Executive Committee, Executive Compensation Committee, Finance and Operations Committee and Board Investment Sub-Committee .

Jones earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration, with a major in accounting, from the College of the Southwest in New Mexico, and a master’s degree in business administration from Eastern New Mexico University.

He began his career in New Mexico at the College of the Southwest in Hobbs, where he served as vice president of administration/chief financial officer from 1992 to 2003.

Jones and his family had some experience at Sherman. He was vice president of business services at Grayson College from 2003 to 2007. His wife, Tangela, worked in Austin College’s office of business affairs from 2005 to 2007.

“Tangela and I are thrilled to be members of the Austin College family again and to be residents of Grayson County,” Jones said. “I have been encouraged by the warm welcome I have received from ‘RooNation and look forward to furthering Austin College’s mission.”

After the move to Grayson College, Jones and his family moved back to New Mexico where he served as vice president of business services at San Juan College from 2007 to 2011 before joining Eastern University.
