Patagonia boycotts popular Wyoming ski resort after owner organizes fundraiser with MTG

Outdoor sports company Patagonia dropped a lucrative deal to sell its clothing and accessories at a Wyoming resort after its owner organized a fundraiser for the right-wing House Freedom Caucus, according to reports.

The August 5 event, held at the well-known Jackson Hole Mountain Resort ski hot spot, featured speeches by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., Former Trump chief of staff White House Mark Meadows and Representative Jim Jordan, R-Ohio. All three have repeated election conspiracies and anti-vaccine messages over the past year, as well as a number of positions that diverge from Patagonia’s public positions on social issues such as voting rights, environmentalism and support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

“Those who know us in Jackson Hole know that we make business decisions and build relationships that align with our values ​​and advocacy efforts,” Patagonia spokesperson Corley Kenna. told the Washington Post. “We join the local community who are using their voice to protest. We will continue to use our business to advocate for policies to protect our planet, to support thriving communities and a strong democracy.”

Jay Kemmerer, co-owner of the complex, is a prolific Conservative donor who has, in recent cycles, donated to Republican candidates like Rep. Madison Cawthorn, RN.C., Senator Mitch McConnell and Senator Tommy Tuberville, among others, based on campaign finance data compiled by the non-profit organization OpenSecrets.org. He has also contributed over $ 200,000 to Trump’s re-election campaign in recent years, the Jackson Hole News & Guide reported.

He openly argued with both the board of directors and resort staff over his political positions, resulting in an editorial published in the local newspaper last week, praising the company’s contribution to local environmental policies and its commitment to diversity.

A number of Wyoming residents have also called for a boycott of the popular ski destination, with many joining a large protest ahead of the fundraiser – which reportedly cost at least $ 2,000 per couple to attend.

Kenna said another local point of sale, WyoFile, that the resort was Patagonia’s biggest customer in the area, although she didn’t give details.

“This is our biggest customer in a region – it’s really critical,” she said. “It tells you something about the importance of this relationship. We don’t take the end lightly.”

Patagonia has said it will reconsider its boycott of Kemmerer resort if it reconsiders several of its priorities, especially the ski resort’s commitment to the environment.

“It’s basically about staying true to our deep feeling and our responsibility as a charitable organization to defend and advance our priorities, our policies to protect our planet and our communities,” Kenna said.
